Barefoot Chamber Concerts ("an enterprise noted for both its quality and informality" - San Francisco Classical Voice) presents really good music in the right acoustic and without the formality of most classical music events.
The second concert of our 2026-27 season is a special treat: as an admittedly viol-centric series, we are delighted to present two of North America's premier viol players in a concert of gorgeous viol duos. Lisa Terry is an East Coast doyenne ("flawlessly elegant", New York Times), and Lynn Tetenbaum is well known to East Bay audiences as the ever-popular star of the Bay Area, up and down the West Coast, and beyond. Together they explore the world of music for two viols.
Composers include Michael East, John Jenkins, Christopher Simpson, Francois Couperin, Ste-Colombe, and Georg Philipp Telemann.
Most of these composers were actually viol players, and in any case, very few French or English composers could resist writing music for two viols. The instrument can play treble parts, bass parts, chords, and can switch seamlessly from one style to another. Viols have a stunning dynamic range and a variety of articulation possibilities. What more could a baroque composer want? For a viol player, the repertoire for two viols is almost as significant as the solo repertoire.
All of this in the wonderful acoustic of the newly refurbished Magdalen Hall of St. Mary Magalen Church in Berkeley. Don't miss this!
