The Berkeley Bird Festival Sunday, October 18th https://berkeleybirdfestival.org/The David Brower Center | 2150 Allston Way, Berkeley (between Oxford and Schattuck) 12-5pm
Birding Field Trips | Various Parks Around Berkeley 8am-5pm
Free | Family-Friendly | All Ages
Every bird holds a memory. Every memory holds a meaning. Across different cultures and communities, across time and space, birds have played a significant role in shaping our understanding of the world, ourselves, and our relationship in nature.
On Sunday, October 18th, this year’s Berkeley Bird Festival invites you to celebrate our incredible birdlife here in the Bay Area through the theme of “Myth and Memories”.
Get outside and witness the birds and our shared environment. Engage with the Myth of the Flying Africans. Fold a crane for peace and longevity. Hear the story of SF’s Wild Parrots. Watch the street “split the sky” through a dance inspired by migration. Listen to the science behind wildlife and remember, every feather, past and present, is a portal to a world where all of us thrive.
This year two award-winning journalists and authors, Lauren Markham and Ed Yong, will share the stage and talk about what it means to “Bear Witness” through their most recent and forthcoming works!
This festival brings science, art, and culture under its wing to inspire our collective imagination and action in protecting birds and our environment. We hope you’ll join us whether you're bird-curious or a long-time advocate.
All performances and presentations are drop-in with the exception of birding trips that require advanced registration. Gather your flock, swoop in, and dive into a world of birds, Myth and Memory.
#MythandMemory #BerkeleyBirdFest2026 #BBF2026

Transportation: We highly recommend taking public transit via BART to the Downtown Berkeley BART station to get here! We’re also big proponents of biking to your favorite bird festival if possible.
Directions: From the Downtown Berkeley BART station the David Brower Center is a four minute walk away. Head south from the station and turn left onto Allston Way.
Parking: The street along Allston between Oxford and Shattuck will be closed for the festival and street parking is very limited near the venue. There is a parking garage at 2165 Kittredge St., just around the corner of the venue with a $3/hr fee or $22 for the day.

La Val's Subterranean Theater, 1834 Euclid Ave, Berkeley, CA, 94709

Descend down to La Val’s Subterranean Theater and delve into a vivid story woven from several lesser-known European fairy tales that reflect the dark and dangerous undercurrents of childhood and all of its enchantment. In Mary Zimmerman’s The Secret in the Wings, a child is left with a frightening ogre, a basement becomes an enchanted kingdom, and one strange story gives way to the next in a kaleidoscopic unfolding of fairy tale as nightmare, memory, and theatrical spell. Embracing Lunatico’s physical, ensemble-driven style, director Michael Barr, creates a grimy, beautiful, and unsettling dreamscape that emerges from the shadowy corners of La Val’s Subterranean Theater. This Halloween season, join Lunatico in the basement for a night of fairy-tale lunacy…if you dare. Playing October 10th-November 1st, with a costume contest on the Halloween night performance!

Maestro Kent Nagano, Berkeley Symphony's Music Director Laureate, returns to the East Bay for a program tracing the enduring legacy of J.S. Bach through the works of Felix Mendelssohn and into the present day. The curtain rises on Mendelssohn's haunting overture The Hebrides (Fingal's Cave), followed by the world premiere of Vater unser, a new work by Argentine composer Alex Nante which takes a Bach chorale as its point of departure, transforming inherited musical material into a luminous new sound world. Pianist Mari Kodama, renowned for her "delicate virtuosity," joins Nagano onstage for Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 1, and the composer's magnificent Symphony No. 5, "Reformation," brings the program to a powerful conclusion.$25-118.Presented by Berkeley Symphony

New Art Eco-models: Reclaiming Creativity in the Age of Infinite Content
In this lecture, Giovanni Aloi follows the making of the artist myth, from the Renaissance master to the modern rebel and creative entrepreneur, exposing institutions, wealth, and exclusions that have sustained it. Against this exhausted genealogy, his book I’m Not an Artist (2025) proposes an eco-cultural model for artistic life. Creativity precedes art. It exceeds galleries and markets, emerging as a generative force through which living beings continually reshape their worlds. Seen ecologically, the artist can no longer be imagined as an isolated genius. The artist becomes an organism among organisms, entangled with collaborators, audiences, materials, economies, and more-than-human agencies. From this perspective, the art world itself begins to resemble a habitat: diverse, interdependent, sustained through exchanges whose value cannot always be measured.
How can ecologically minded artists lead the way to a complete reconsideration of the art world and the future of creativity?
About the Presenter Dr. Giovanni Aloi is an author, educator, and curator whose work focuses on the representation of nature and the environment in art. Aloi is the editor-in-chief of Antennae: The Journal of Nature in Visual Culture and editor of the University of Minnesota Press series ‘Art after Nature’. He has written and edited numerous books on the representation of the natural world, with a particular focus on vegetal imagery, including Why Look at Plants? (2018), Botanical Revolutions (2025), and Lawn (2025). He has collaborated with institutions such as the BBC, PBS, Whitechapel Gallery, Tate, and the Art Institute of Chicago, and has curated exhibitions across the United States and Europe.
