Cheap Thrills: Hiking The Quarry Trail Loop

Spend an afternoon hiking The Quarry Trail Loop, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature as the season shifts in Tilden Park.

Smack dab in the middle of the afternoon, as the sun crests high in the sky, and brassy light spills and splinters through the trees, head into the sylvan heart of Tilden Park and spend an hour or so hiking The Quarry Trail Loop.

The trailhead is located off of Wildcat Canyon Road, in a turnout just before Inspiration Point. There’s usually plenty of parking and a couple of outhouses are situated nearby for a convenient pre-hike potty break. People meet up with friends in the lot, or congregate at the picnic benches, watching as their dogs romp through the tall grass in eager anticipation of a long walk. There’s a comforting sense of social interaction and intention that’s reassuring without being intrusive — you’re left alone without being alone — as you set off on your solo ramble.

Making your way up the dusty trail, hawks soar overhead, riding out the warm current of air, rabbits skitter furtively into the underbrush, and the occasional snake slithers past. Sounds are muted, the softer hum of nature moving forward to push out the pulse of nearby traffic. Eucalyptus trees groan and creak as you move into their shade, a gentle breeze plays against your cheek, and a sweet, peaty aroma permeates the air. Soon, as you move into the rhythm of your walk, your mind loosens with your limbs, letting go of worry and giving into the pure pleasure of the outdoors.

The loop takes about an hour to complete, depending on your pace, and is pretty moderate in its physical requirements. Remember to bring some water and slather on the sunscreen before you start off. So pick an afternoon, slip into your sweats, lace up your tennies, and commence your afternoon trek along The Quarry Trail.
