Disability Rights Advocates Honored In Berkeley
The disability rights movement nationwide was spawned at UC Berkeley.

BERKELEY, CA — Three people will be honored Wednesday evening in Berkeley by the Center for Independent Living to celebrate Ed Roberts Day, a California state holiday to remember disability rights activist Ed Roberts.
The Honorable Thelton E. Henderson, Gerald Baptiste and Ted A. Dienstfrey will receive the CIL's highest honor Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the University Club at the University of California at Berkeley's Memorial Stadium at 2227 Piedmont Ave. in Berkeley.
Henderson is a former federal judge in Northern California, Baptiste is the former deputy director of the CIL and Dienstfrey is a former board member for the CIL.

Roberts pioneered the disability rights movement nationwide and at UC Berkeley, where he received a degree. According to the university, Roberts is the father of the movement to give people with disabilities and special needs the opportunity to live independently. Roberts died in 1995.
