Man Suspected of Recording Students in UC Berkeley Dorm Restrooms, Showers

A man was arrested on suspicion of recording students without their knowledge inside the restroom and showers of a residence hall at the University of California at Berkeley, campus police said.

Alfred Mendez, 20, is suspected of unlawful recording with an electronic device, UC police said.

On March 30, police said they received a report that a student had noticed a cellphone extended underneath the stall partition inside a co-ed restroom, with the camera facing up.

The victim exited the stall and waited for the suspect inside the adjacent stall to leave, according to police.

When Mendez exited, and the victim recognized him as a hall resident, police said.

Investigators seized Mendez’s phone, laptop and several CDs and DVDs, discovering more victims of video voyeurism in the residence hall showers, according to police.

Campus police said he no longer resides in university housing.

People are advised to be aware of their surroundings and to contact UC police immediately if they see a suspicious person in their building by calling 911 from a campus phone or (510) 642-3333 from a cellphone.
