Sickle-Swinging Man Arrested In Berkeley
An elderly man was injured and taken to the hospital.

BERKELEY, CA — A 70-year-old man suffered injuries to his hands and legs when he was attacked with a sickle at a Berkeley home, according to police. The injured man, who was visiting from Oakland, was able to escape along with the homeowner. The injured man was taken to a hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, the sickle-swinging man barricaded himself in the home, hunkering down for eight hours until police were finally able to arrest him.
Police received a call shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday about "a man was waiving around a sickle." When officers arrived, they learned of the attack. Police officers established a perimeter and used a PA speaker to call for the suspect to come outside. When he refused, the BPD Special Response Team responded, along with Department Negotiators and a canine unit from the San Leandro Police Department.
At 2 a.m. Monday, the Special Response Team entered the home and found the suspect hiding on an upper level. Officers used less lethal projectiles on the suspect for force him to comply.

The accused man was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and felony battery.
