Update On Safeway Worker Stabbed At Grocery Store

The worker was stabbed by a shoplifter on Thursday.

BERKELEY, CA — The injuries suffered by a Safeway grocery store employee in North Berkeley after being stabbed by a shoplifting suspect Thursday afternoon were not life-threatening, a police spokesman said.

Berkeley police Sgt. Andrew Frankel said the stabbing occurred at the Safeway at 1444 Shattuck Place, between Vine and Rose streets, shortly before 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Frankel described the incident as "a shoplifting that became a robbery when the suspect stabbed a Safeway staff member who was in his way."

The suspect fled the scene before officers responded to the stabbing and is still at large, according to Frankel.

The Safeway employee was transported to Highland Hospital in Oakland for treatment. Frankel said he's not sure if the employee remained hospitalized.
