Beverly Hills Spine Surgeon Dr. Carl Lauryssen Becomes First in the U.S. to Participate in New “Pledge to Be a Hero” Program Benefitting Children’s Charities

Spinal Elements, a California-based spine technology company, announced that local Beverly Hills spine surgeon Carl Lauryssen, M.D., the first neurosurgeon to inject stem cells into a human spinal cord, was also the first surgeon in the country to join its new “Pledge to be a Hero” program.

“Pledge to Be a Hero” participants agree to use only allograft tissue from companies that do not profit from the transfer of that tissue whenever clinically feasible. Although many companies earn significant profits from the sale of allograft, Spinal Elements, a for-profit company based in Carlsbad, Calif., has chosen to donate all profits from the sale of Hero allograft to charities benefiting children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Dr. Lauryssen said, “I’m proud to participate in this program. With all else being equal in terms of safety and efficacy, I would rather support something that goes to a good cause while paying respect to the donor that made the allograft possible.”
