Beverly's QB Is Back and Better Than Ever
BHHS senior Josh Newman returns as starting quarterback and is ready to lead the Normans into the postseason.

Beverly senior Josh Newman is out to prove that he has what it takes to be in the elite ranks of SoCal's prep quarterbacks.
"He has all the tools, a strong arm, good accuracy, great vision, a real good head on his shoulders and a big heart," said Don Paysinger, Beverly Hills High School varsity football coach. "Josh has what it takes to make it to the next level and now he's finally starting to realize all of his potential.''
Newman was on point at 7-on-7 passing tournaments over the summer, including one hosted by the Normans. He was solid during events at Arroyo Grande and Los Alamitos, and also played well at the Conejo Valley Classic.

"Coming into the summer, I knew that if I played some good football that I could attract some interest from scouts and college recruiters. You know, put my name out there for everyone to see,'' Newman said. "There's a lot of good quarterbacks in California and if I keep improving, I can add my name to the long list.''
At 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds, Newman possesses the frame that college coaches covet. But simply measuring up and having the size doesn't necessarily mean he is heading to the next level.

"I don't have any [college] offers yet,'' he said. "I'm not discouraged though. There's still plenty of time to showcase my skills and change things.''
Newman saw limited action for BHHS as a sophomore. He played sparingly in a 28-13 loss to Long Beach Jordan in his varsity debut. He did go on to complete 10 of 18 passes for 117 yards to guide the Normans to a 37-28 non-league victory over Santa Barbara.
As a junior, Newman completed more than 60 percent of his passes. But the Normans finished with a 4-6 overall record and the season was considered a disappointment.
"Josh is ready to breakout. His time is coming,'' said teammate Greg Townsend Jr., one of the nation's top defensive end prospects. "He doesn't worry about all the hype. He knows that if he takes care of business on the field, everything will work out.''
When the Normans return to practice on Aug. 23, Newman's quest to make a name for himself as a college prospect will resume.
"I can't wait to get back out on the field. I'm ready to go out there and prove myself to the world,'' he said. "This, finally, is my time to shine.''
