BHHS Wrestlers Succeed at Open Meet

Four Normans combine to win first, second and third-place medals in Anaheim.

Beverly Hills High varsity wrestlers combined to win five medals at the Southern California Wrestling Association Open Tournament last Saturday at Canyon High in Anaheim.

In the 171-pound weight class, senior captain Armand Farrokh took home two first-place medals, winning all four of his matches in both the freestyle and folkstyle divisions.

"He's the best wrestler we've had here in 30 years," Beverly Hills head coach Mark Mead said of Farrokh, the only Norman wrestler who qualified for the Masters Meet in February. "He was wrestling at 142 a month ago and he had never wrestled freestyle before, yet he still won."

Junior Marshall Stevens took home the gold medal in the 215-pound folkstyle division—the division used in high school and collegiate meets. Freestyle, which implements a different point system and different moves, is used in international competition and the Olympics.

Junior Dylan Lojac went 3-1 in the folkstyle division at 160 pounds and took the silver medal. Sophomor Eaen Irwin was third in the 135-pound folkstyle division and got the bronze medal.

"This meet was kind of just for fun to keep the guys who are coming back from getting too rusty," Mead said. "The season picks up again around Thanksgiving and I think we have the pieces to be about as good as we were last year. Maybe even better."
