BHUSD Fills Administrative Positions at City Schools

Hawthorne and Beverly Vista have new assistant principals.

Beverly Hills students this week to new administrators at several district campuses.

Christian Fuhrer, onetime assistant principal and a veteran teacher at the school, is now the assistant principal at . The vacancy was created when Kathy Shaeffer was promoted from Hawthorne’s assistant principal position to that of principal. As Patch , former Hawthorne Principal Toni Staser moved to an open assistant principal post at .

“While it is bittersweet to leave the great community of Horace Mann, having spent my entire career in education there, I am excited about the opportunity to assist Principal Kathy Schaeffer and work with the incredibly talented staff of Hawthorne School,” Fuhrer told Patch.  “I look forward to helping Hawthorne continue the great educational successes [it has] enjoyed over the years.”

Horace Mann will not need to fill the acting assistant principal position because the school’s permanent assistant principal, Dana Findley, has returned to work part-time until her maternity leave is over in November.

At , former math teacher Richard Waters was promoted to assistant principal, replacing Diane Mead, who took a teaching position at Hawthorne.

“As a graduate from El Rodeo and Beverly Hills High School, I understand the specific needs of our students [at Beverly Vista],” Waters wrote in an email to Patch. “I look forward to supporting our wonderful BV teachers so that they can continue to provide our students with an exceptional educational experience.”

Board of Education Vice President Brian Goldberg sent an email to constituents in support of Waters' promotion.

“Mr. Waters has had a distinguished career as a math teacher at El Rodeo,” he wrote. “I am pleased that he is now in an administrative role for the district and in particular at Beverly Vista.”

The Beverly Hills Unified School District must still find a permanent principal at Beverly Vista, where Interim Principal Irene Stern has agreed to stay through the school year.

At the BHUSD office, Dina Parker has been hired as the director of special education. Parker most recently had that same position at the Torrance Unified School District. She has replaced Harriet Maglin, who took a job at a school district in the Santa Cruz area.
