Is 24-Hour Access to a Cupcake Really a Good Idea?

I love cupcakes. I'm just not sure I love them at all hours of the night and distributed one at a time.

I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around the new . I’ve driven by it, cruising down Little Santa Monica Boulevard with my eyes clearly drawn to the brightly striped storefront. Probably not the safest thing I’ve done in a while, but I was curious.

I’ve thought about stopping and trying it out—you know, for prosperity’s sake.

I’ve even watched all of the YouTube videos about ordering a cupcake via computer screen and watching it magically appear in the swivel compartment. Pretty cool, I have to admit. I’m definitely intrigued.

But then I come to my senses and realize there is no reason to have 24-hour access to a cupcake. It’s a cupcake for goodness sake!

Yes, the lines out of Sprinkles are notoriously long. But isn’t that part of the allure? Gossip happens in line. Then there’s the feeling of being a VIP when you walk past the 30 tourists right up to the front to pick up your call-ahead order. It’s part of the Sprinkles experience, after all. The very one that they cleverly crafted by the store design and insistence on keeping the door closed (you know, to keep the cupcakes fresh).

And let’s be honest...with all of the cupcake stores in the area— is down the street, after all—do we really need a robot to distribute one cupcake at a time?

What about the fact that you can get a cupcake at 1 a.m.? Is that really a good idea? Sure, my high-school self is loving it: a midnight run for cupcakes while studying for AP Chem. I would have been all over that. But as an adult, I’m not sure I like the idea.

Does anybody really need a cupcake after 10 p.m.? Doesn’t access to a delicious, sugary dessert at any time fly in the face of our society’s attempt to curb obesity?

Don’t get me wrong. I will probably try it at some point. I just need to hate the idea of it first.
