Everything you Need to Know About Calla Lilies

Even though the calla lily is not really a true lily, it still blossoms into one of the most majestic of flowers. Calla lilies come in a variety of colors while growing from rhizomes which makes them an exceptional addition to flower beds and walkway borders. They can also make wonderful indoor plants when facing a sunny window or an outdoor patio.

Here are a few useful tips for growing your beautiful calla lilies.

1. Calla lilies are very easy to maintain as long as you choose the proper growing location. They grow best when planted in loose soil that gets very good water drainage. These beautiful flowers tend to grow best in areas of the garden that get direct sunlight. In warmer climates, a partially shady area is usually acceptable.
2. Try to plant your calla lilies during the springtime so that they are not threatened by harsh winds and frosts.
3. For the best results, plant your calla lilies about 4 inches deep into the soil, spacing each new plant about 12 inches apart.
4. Calla lilies love water. Make sure to give them a healthy watering immediately after planting.
5. Fertilize the flowers beds at least once per month for the most vibrant blooms of the season.
6. Top off the soil around the base of the plant with a bit of mulch to keep the soil moist and to prevent the growth of weeds.

Once your calla lilies have fully bloomed and autumn is approaching, allow your plants some dormant time in order to die back. If the plant is located indoors, relocate the plant to a darker area of the home. In both cases, it is best to stop watering the plants for a period of about 60 to 90 days. Once the first frost has hit, outdoor calla lilies should be dug up and dried out before placing the rhizomes into a dry, dark location until your next spring planting.
