Fish Rises to No. 7 in the ATP Standings

The Beverly Hills resident has achieved his highest world ranking to date.

Mardy Fish has moved up in the tennis world. The Beverly Hills resident ascended to a career-high No. 7 ranking in the ATP World Tour after his 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 defeat at the hands of top-seeded Serbian Novak Djokovic in the Rogers Cup final in Montreal on Sunday. 

But a heel injury has forced Fish to withdraw from next week's Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, D.C.

Fish has enjoyed a successful 2011 campaign thus far, reaching the of the at UCLA on July 31. He moved up to No. 8 in the world the next day—matching his highest career ranking until this week. The Edina, Minnesota native had previously taken the No. 8 spot on July 4 after reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

The Rogers Cup marked Fish's fourth Masters Series final. On his way to the championship match he avenged his three-set Farmers Classic loss to Latvian Ernests Gulbis.

Fish saved three match points in the final game of the Rogers Cup before succumbing to Djokovic, the world's top-ranked player. The Serbian has 13,500 points, followed by Spain's Rafael Nadal (11,420) and Switzerland's Roger Federer (9,200). Fish is the highest-ranked U.S. player with 3,060 points, followed by Andy Roddick at No. 15 with 2,030 points.

The 29-year-old Fish won his sixth career ATP singles title July 24 at the Atlanta Tennis Championships, rallying past fellow American John Isner, 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2 in the final.

Fish was a silver medalist at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece and has a career singles record of 265-190. He has earned $5.2 million in prize money since turning pro in 2000 at the age of 18. In doubles play, Fish has a 126-96 career record with eight titles. He attained a career-best doubles ranking of No. 14 in July 2009.
