How to File For Long Term Disability Benefits

What you need to know when filing for long term disability benefits.

An injury can be one of the most difficult things to cope with. Aside from the pain and discomfort you may have to endure after an accident, you still have bills to pay, but now you are unable to work. Add on top of this the complexity and confusion that comes with navigating disability insurance and benefits claims and you have the perfect storm of stress that could bring even the strongest of Superman or Superwoman to their knees.
The good news is that the daylight at the end of the tunnel may be closer than you think. Though it may be somewhat tiring and difficult, receiving the compensation you deserve does not have to be impossible. The following are some guidelines to consider before filing for disability benefits that can make the process as simple and seamless as possible. Emphasis on the "as possible" part.
1. Understand Your Benefits Package...
The last thing you will need in your life are any curve-balls, keep everything right down the middle. Before filing you need to know what is covered by your employers benefits package. Read your brochures, your pamphlets, your PDFs, your whatever it is you received describing your benefits and ask every little question you may have to anyone that may have an answer. You need to know exactly what makes you eligible, what makes you ineligible, the maximum duration a claim can be filed, what compensation to expect, elimination periods, appeals, and much much more.
2. Get on the Same Page With Your Doctor...
Insurance companies will obviously want to contact your doctor before awarding benefits. You need to have a doctor who is recommending and supportive that you take a medical leave of absence. In addition, making sure you have an accurate medical record that is consistent with your timeline and symptoms is very important as insurers will often try and bamboozle you out of coverage anyway possible.
3. Describe Your Condition in Detail When Applying...
Obviously you do not want to lie or over exaggerate any symptoms, but you also do not want to be shy either. It may feel like you are being dramatic and whiny but it is crucial that you articulate well your condition to your insurer. Remember, disability benefits are only awarded to the disabled. Write out an entire encyclopedia of an explanation if you have to but make sure that you leave no stone unturned and no doubt that your injury is keeping you out of work.
4. Consult With a Disability and Injury Lawyer...
Ultimately you can do everything in the above alone and hope for the best, but you only get one shot at filing your claim right. Once you submit your information, there is no going back. For some it can be like the perfect words in a cover letter, for others it can be like the late night voicemail you left for your ex. In the event that a claim is denied, an appeal may be filed. If you want to assure that you are receiving the maximum compensation possible, or need guidance through the complex appeals process, hire a long term disability claims attorney. As a policyholder, you have a right to the benefits outlined in your contract and may prompt them at any time, but without the proper help you may decrease your chances of receiving payment.
