One Hundred Years Young

City Council honors centenarian Dorothie Richberg.

It's not everyday that we get to celebrate a centennial birthday in Beverly Hills, but at the last City Council meeting Dorothie Richberg was honored for reaching that milestone.

"I'm very happy to be here," Richberg said at the Aug. 3, 2010 meeting. "There is a lot I've seen and heard throughout the years."

Born Aug. 11, 1910, Richberg moved to Beverly Hills in 1977 to be closer to family after a 30-year career as a social worker in New York. She graduated from Hunter College in 1931 with bachelor degrees in French and social work.

Vice Mayor Barry Brucker presented Richberg with a proclamation that noted "her extraordinary life" and wished her "a happy 100th birthday."

Mayor Jimmy Delshad described the opportunity to recognize Richberg as "an honor." At the urging of Delshad, Richberg's grandson, Cantor Yonal Kliger of Temple Emanuel in Beverly Hills, made a special prayer to commemorate the event.

"This prayer is in the Jewish tradition that thanks God for reaching a special moment," Kliger said. "All moments small and great. This one is a great one."
