Summer in Beverly Hills Means ... Time to Test the Fire Hydrants?
Yes. The city wants to ensure that the hydrants will work properly when needed.
From a city of Beverly Hills press release:
The city of Beverly Hills is systematically testing all the city's fire hydrants during July through September to ensure that the hydrants will work properly when
needed.
The city’s contractor, M.E. Simpson Co., will conduct the tests of the water flow to each hydrant. Residents and businesses will be notified by letter before testing starts in their neighborhood.
This annual testing is required to maintain the City’s ISO Class I fire service rating. This rating verifies the city’s ability to effectively respond to any fire emergency. Additionally it allows citizens within Beverly Hills to receive better rates on fire insurance.
Residents may see water running out of fire hydrants and into the storm drains. During the testing, the water to the homes and businesses closest to the hydrant may be discolored and there may be less water pressure than usual. Even though the water will look different for a short time, it will be safe to drink.
Once the testing is done, residents and businesses should turn on an outside water faucet and let it run until the water is clear, and flush all taps including washing machines before using again.
The crews and equipment used for the testing may block portions of the streets or take up parking spaces for a short time. Streets will re-open as soon as testing is completed.
