Sydney Gray Sets School Record at State Finals
The BHHS senior finishes fourth in the 800 meters with a personal best time of 2:09.15.
After surprising everyone in the stadium by clocking the fastest qualifying time in the 800-meter race Friday at the CIF State Track & Field Championships, Beverly Hills High senior Sydney Gray proved it was no fluke by finishing fourth the next day in the finals with a BHHS school record time of 2:09.15 at Buchanan High in Clovis.
Gray was last going into the second of two laps but closed with a flourish for a new personal best and the 18th fastest prep time in the nation this season. Gray's finals time meets the high school All-American standard.
Amy Weissenbach of Harvard-Westlake High in North Hollywood set a new state and national record time of 2:02.04, Savannah Camacho of Templeton was second in 2:07.84 and Charlotte Kuzminsky of Canyon Crest Academy was third in 2:09.11.

Gray became the 46th track & field All-American at BHHS since 1927. Her finals time broke her own record of 2:10.51, which she set in winning her heat in Friday's prelims. She also broke the Normans record of 2:11.12 set last year by state finalist Raquel “Rocky” Hefflin.
Gray had run 2:12.49 to finish ninth at the CIF Masters Meet in Cerritos the previous week. Saturday's effort capped a brilliant senior season for the George Washington-bound Gray, who won the CIF Southern Section Division 2 race in 2:13.51, making her the only Normans runner to advance to the Masters Meet.
