The Craving: Rainbow Rolls

We fished around for the best places in Beverly Hills to enjoy these sushi creations.

For anyone who has ever had a sweet spot for sushi but had no idea what to order, this week's Rainbow Roll romp through Beverly Hills is sure to prevent any future decision-making predicament. After all, why choose between tuna, shrimp, yellowtail or salmon when it's possible to have all of the above? Exactly.

1) Boss Sushi

If I am going to order a rainbow roll, it is going to take over my taste buds with a fusion of fish and avocado flavor. Weak rolls need not apply. So when I found out about the Boss Specialty Rainbow Roll, I decided that the name was a strong enough suggestion that I wouldn't be disappointed. Luckily I had been forewarned about the sour cream that sprinkles the roll, and modified the order. The result was a sauce-covered, salad-accompanied, flavor-packed Rainbow Roll. Mmm, Mmm, good. That's all.

2) Sushi Dokoro Ki Ra La

Cool as a cucumber. That pretty much sums up this restaurant's version of the Rainbow Roll, titled the Ki Ra La Roll. Filled with sashimi, and sprinkled with crunchy cucumber and what looked like green onions, the roll had more spice to it than other rainbow rolls that I have tasted—in a surprisingly yummy way. The price tag was hefty for the different take on the roll, but was worth every penny. You get what you pay for, typically.

3) Crazy Fish Japanese Restaurant

Admittedly, I almost passed this place up due to the rumored price tag. I pondered the possibility that the word "crazy" in the name came from the thought-process of the person who decided to put a higher than normal double-digit number on a single-digit roll. Eight pieces cost $20. However, I heard such heavenly things about the rainbow roll here that I had to go. And I'm glad I did. The larger-than-usual salmon section alone was enough to justify the price for me; it was quality sushi. It was so good that I retract my statement about the origins of crazy in the name. I would have said sorry about that, but my mouth was too full.
