136 Citations Issued in 1 Day in Peninsula Traffic Safety Operation: Police

The Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program deployed a team to the cities on Wednesday. Here are the results. [breaking]

BURLINGAME, CA – On Wednesday, 14 traffic officers from various law enforcement agencies throughout San Mateo County participated in the Saturation Traffic Enforcement Program (S.T.E.P.). This was the twelfth deployment in 2016 of a collaborative effort to increase traffic safety and awareness in known trouble spots throughout San Mateo County. The effort focused in Belmont and San Carlos.

Officers made in excess of 155 stops and issued 136 citations. Of the 136 citations issued,

      • 22 citations were issued to drivers for cell phone violations
      • 37 citations were issued to drivers for unsafe turn violations
      • 21 citations were issued to drivers for stop sign violations
      • 13 citations were issued to drivers for failing to obey a sign or signal
      • 10 citations were issued to drivers for texting violations
      • 4 citations were issued to drivers for unsafe speed violations

Additionally, one driver was found to be driving unlicensed on the roadway.

The participating officers remained committed to making a high volume of traffic stops in this coordinated saturation, while maintaining the highest levels of community awareness and professionalism. The number of stops and citations during this most recent deployment reflect a sustained enthusiasm for this program and traffic safety on the Peninsula.

This is the twelfth deployment in a number of planned multi-agency saturation deployments scheduled to be performed throughout San Mateo County in 2016 and 2017. The San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association have all committed to this important safety initiative.
