Burlingame Spirit Run

A runner's view of the Burlingame Spirit Run.

Waking up early on a vacation day is not my cup of tea, but this Labor Day I begrudgingly pulled myself out of bed at an early hour to run the , a fundraiser for the Burlingame School District. What a great start to the day!

When I arrived at where the race was held, there was already a crowd. People were energized and ready to run. There even were cheerleaders. I soon got over waking up early, and I was excited to run.

Seeing the community out and supporting the schools was great. There were babies in strollers. There were groups of friends running together. There were toddlers jogging next to their grandparents. There were cross country runners and there were walkers.

As the starting gun went off, there was a frenzy as people dashed off. The course winded through the neighborhoods around BIS and Easton. I take for granted how pretty Burlingame neighborhoods are. The tree lined sidewalks next to manicured lawns and gardens made for a beautiful run.The sun was up, the birds were chirping and I was running through gorgeous Burlingame neighborhoods. Life was good.

As runners finished on the BIS blacktop, we were welcomed by cheering fans and many health booths from the Palo Alto Medical Foundation to . Even Peter and Patty Panther, the Burlingame High School mascots, made an appearance.

I ran the race with a couple of cross country teammates and we agreed to do it again next year.  It was well organized and to the average runner, it looked like everything ran smoothly. I commend the event organizers and I hope it continues every Labor Day!
