The lazy days of a California summer are coming to an end. Although with all the summer camps, vacations and activities for our children, it may seem that the school year is slightly less hectic. The summer months just seem to fly by and before you know it we are back in full school-time swing. This year my son will start pre-school. I look upon this time with sadness and excitement in different degrees.
The idea that his day will be occupied with new and excited learning experiences is balanced with the sadness that someone else will now be added to his journey of self awareness. My son is not a shy or demure flower, cautious with anticipation of consequences yet realized. He is a fireball of energy and exploration with a boundless capacity for mischief and danger. He is one to test the boundaries of reason and the patience of even the most patient person in the world (my wife).
As he starts preschool I will light a candle for the patron saint of teachers worldwide as I say a prayer for their sanity and safety. While I am sure he will not be their first or biggest challenge I am certain he will be a contender for the title.

I am sure I will spend many days watching him unseen enjoying his new social experience. I take solace in the fact that I made it through the same process slightly bruised and less scarred than I deserved.
Better for the experience, but now blessed with a boy with an equal capacity for chaos. He is his father’s son.

The better news: our daughter who is younger is her mother’s daughter; sweet, funny, and delightful. Her capacity for chaos is only realized in the presence of her brother and his trailblazing attempts to forge new paths of anarchy.
So to Nikko’s future teachers, be patient he will test the limits of your endurance and patience but will reward you with smiles are big as the golden gate bridge. One year later you will see his sister and will pause to wonder if they are of the same genetic stock. They are. Just different one is like mommy and one like daddy!
