Seniors Shake, Stretch and Strengthen in Motion Class

For seniors, regular exercise can boost cardiovascular function and bone health, decrease risk factors for diseases, increase strength and balance, and cut the risk of falling.

The fountain of youth may not exist outside of legend, but with its long list of health benefits and healing powers, exercise comes pretty close.

“Regular exercise at any age can boost cardiovascular function and bone health and decrease risk factors for diseases such as cancer and diabetes,” said Michelle Marheineke, an exercise physiologist at Mills-Peninsula, who teaches the Seniors in Motion class at the Fitness and Therapy Center.

“The list of benefits goes on: Exercise also increases muscle mass and strength, counteracting the loss of muscle that occurs with age. In addition, stronger muscles improve balance, which is key to cutting the risk of falling.”

“Everyone starts this class at their own level. We warm up and cool down as a group, but during the session each participant goes at their own pace, depending on their goals,” Michelle explained. “Class members get moving on treadmills, stationery bikes, arm bikes and rowing machines. If someone is unfamiliar with gym equipment, I also demonstrate how to safely work a machine and adjust settings. The class also includes strengthening, stretching and relaxation.”
