Summer vacation is fast approaching, and it’s hard for a teen to decide what to do. Some friends are going on long vacations with family and friends. Some are volunteering on mission trips. Some are off to college programs taking part in athletics and academics, where they can stay in the dorms and get a feeling for college. Some are taking part in programs for traveling and expanding cultural knowledge, such as People to People.
If you are spending all summer at home, you can get a jump on classes by taking courses at the College of San Mateo. Summer is also a great time to volunteer and put in a lot of community service hours. There are many opportunities and places to volunteer such as Shelter Network and Samaritan House.
A summer job is a great and of course rewarding option! I’ve been seeking out the perfect summer job as a camp counselor. I know when I was a little kid I loved all my high school camp counselors. It seems like the perfect job for teens during the summer. The trouble is some jobs – even camp counselors -- want you to stay on and work into the fall. I had this dilemma when I was on my second interview for a counselor position and had to answer the question of whether I could work after school in the fall. I play on a fall sports team with practices every day after school, so I had to bow out. Wish I had known before the first interview! Some of my friends have found jobs in the restaurant business at places like Copenhagen and Blush. I’m sure they’ll be serving you some time over the summer!
