BURLINGAME, CA — Schedule Fido's grooming, as upcoming is your dog's day to shine!

The 16th annual Burlingame Pet Parade kicks off on Broadway at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 28 — a not-to-be-missed event for pup parents on the Peninsula.

This year's parade will be led by Grand Marshal Dusty the Klepto Kitty, who attained national fame for pilfering items from his neighbors in San Mateo. Tots from UMC Nursery School in Burlingame also will lead the parade.

Peninsula pet owners, wishing to march in the parade, started in 2004 by volunteers, must report by 9:30 a.m. to the parking lot near Broadway and Chula Vista Avenue. Have a talented pooch? Those with pets, who wish to participate in the Best Pet Trick contest, are asked to check in at the Information Booth at that corner before 9:30 a.m., too. There is no charge to participate.

Strike up the band as this year's participants will strut to the music of the Los Trancos Woods Community Marching Band, and will be entertained, before and after the parade, by the San Mateo Elks Concert Band. according to organizers.

All public and private schools in San Mateo County, serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade, also can compete for cash prizes in the parade's “Best School Float” contest.

The winning school of the “Best School Float” competition will receive $500, and the second-place winner will receive $250, from the Broadway Merchants Association, according to organizers. School groups must register in advance by contacting Ayn Gilmore at AVR Realty in Burlingame at ayn@avrr.com or calling or (650) 342-2073.

Contests include: Best Pet Trick; Most Unusual Pet; Best Dressed Pet; and Most Original Float, Group or Wagon (non-school category). The Grand Prize winner will receive a special prize. Judging takes place immediately after the parade at Broadway and Capuchino Avenue, officials said.

Sponsors this year include Broadway Merchants Association, the City of Burlingame, the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA, Pet Food Express, In Sync Realty, the Daily Journal, Korody Business Services and Colorprint, according to organizers.

Broadway businesses will join in the festivities, hosting sidewalk sales and special promotions.

The parade will march up Broadway from Chula Vista to Capuchino Avenue, where it will turn right and circle back down Broadway. The entire parade consists of a leisurely stroll that lasts about 30 minutes and is less than three-fourths of a mile. Water stations will be provided for pets.
