Christmas at Kohl

Mercy Burlingame turns Kohl Mansion into a holiday boutique to jump start the season.

One of the most magical things about the holiday season is the way it brings our community together. Be it running into neighbors along Burlingame Avenue, decorating your house with lights or giving to those in need, small actions create a feeling of unity, warmth and tradition around Burlingame. For the past 18 years has provided a valued tradition that truly embraces the holiday spirit—and it is that time again.

From 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. this Wednesday, Dec.1, Christmas at Kohl transforms Mercy's historic Tudor mansion into a winter wonderland boutique. For a $7 donation to the high school (free for Mercy students and children under 14) attendees can make a serious dent in this season's gift shopping.

Over 60 different vendors will fill Kohl mansion's rooms with their wares giving shoppers an array of choices. From specialty treats to beauty products, Christmas crafts and luxury items, prices range from $3 to $300 so visitors of all budgets can participate. Christmas at Kohl makes it a priority to invite locally owned and run businesses, so the money spent supports our bay area economy.

Organized by the Mercy Burlingame Alumnae Association, the $7 entry fee goes back to the association to support other school events or students who need additional financial help. Each year, alumnae look within the school to identify the places of greatest need, and Christmas At Kohl proceeds come to their aid.

"It's such a fun way to kick off the holiday season since the mansion is such a special place," said Carol Fraher, one of the event organizers. "It's fully decorated in the Christmas spirit and really makes you imagine what holiday times were like back in its beginnings."

Though the Alumnae Association primarily plans Christmas At Kohl, everyone in the community helps to make the event a success.

"We couldn't do it without the generous alumnae, parents and students. The whole community helps out and really comes together," Fraher said.

In addition to the boutique, alumnae will offer docent tours at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., giving a comprehensive history of Kohl mansion and the school's development. Light refreshments and wine will be sold so guests can take a break from shopping to admire the stunning decorations. Throughout the night Christmas music will echo through the mansion's halls.

In past years the event has brought up to 600 people, so come early to get started before the crowds pile in. Parking is provided at the mansion (directions available on the Mercy Burlingame site) and additional parking is available at the Our Lady of Angels Church with a shuttle every 15 minutes starting at 5:30 p.m.

Dress is casual, and all visitors are invited to come and enjoy Christmas at Kohl for all it offers. Gather the friends and family to start this season in the full holiday spirit.
