Cops Crack Down, Issue Tickets

Drivers and pedestrians alike got tickets.

BURLINGAME - Officers and Deputies from the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, San Bruno Police Department, and Burlingame Police Department participated in a pedestrian safety operation in the cities of San Bruno and Millbrae on Tuesday. The result: 157 stops and 125 citations.

Traffic officers focused their efforts in trouble spots and conducted saturated traffic enforcement and education to crackdown on drivers and pedestrians who violate traffic laws meant to protect all roadway users.

According to Burlingame Police Sgt. Jim Ford, deputies and officers focused on safety violations such as speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in cross walks, and other dangerous violations.

Officers also conducted enforcement and education for observed violations of pedestrians crossing the street illegally or failing to yield to drivers who had the right of way.

The 125 citations issued:

  • 50 citations were issued for pedestrian right of way violations
  • 34 citations were issued for failure to activate headlights in the rain
  • 11 citations were issued for pedestrians illegally walking in the roadway
  • 10 citations were issued for distracted driving violations
  • 3 citations were issued for pedestrians failing to yield the right of way to oncoming cars

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
