Ice Cream, Cheesecake and … The Ten Commandments
Chabad of the North Peninsula invites the community to an annual Shavuot holiday celebration, featuring the recital of the Ten Commandments and a tasty dairy buffet.
The Jewish holiday of Shavuot, which commemorates the day the Jewish people received the Torah, will be celebrated in style at Chabad of the North Peninsula on Wednesday, May 15 at 5:30pm at 1670 S. Amphlett Blvd #125. S. Mateo 94402. After the traditional recital of the Ten Commandments, a hot dinner along with ice cream and cheesecakes will be served.
According to Rabbi Moishe Weinbaum, Program Director at Chabad, It is customary to eat dairy foods on the holiday. “One of the significances of the custom is that just as milk nurtures an infant, it is the Torah which nurtures the Jewish nation, and has been the key to our survival throughout the ages.”

Rabbi Yossi Marcus, noted author and director of the Chabad Center, will lead a discussion into various topics relating to the giving of the Torah and its relevance in today’s modern and fast-changing world.
Rabbi Weinbaum is encouraging community members to join the celebration with the entire family, especially children, as they were - and are - the central figures in the story. “Our tradition tells of how G-d was asking for a guarantor that the Torah would be observed,” he explains. “The Jewish people offered the forefathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, but were refused. They then offered the Prophets, and were again rebuffed. Finally, they said ‘Our children will be our guarantors.’ G-d agreed, saying, ‘Because of them, I will give the Torah.’”
