Walk to Feed the Hungry - San Francisco

Come join us for a Walk to Feed the Hungry this Saturday, October 13, in San Francisco, sponsored by Buddhist Global Relief. This walk will enable us to take this opportunity to express our compassion through helping the poorest of the poor around the globe.

At 12 noon we will start this 4-mile walk at the oldest Buddhist temple in Chinatown and wend our way through to Japantown, stopping at other temples along the way, and ending at the San Francisco Zen Center, where there will be an opportunity to meditate, congratulate each other on an afternoon well-spent, and enjoy tea and cookies.

People are encouraged to join-in or depart as they need during the 4 mile walk. Everyone is encouraged to set a personal intention before walking, and those who wish to walk mindfully in silence may do so but it is not required. Feel free to walk at your own pace. It will be a time for practice, mindful walking, spreading loving kindness, making spiritual friends, and exercise. It will be a pilgrimage of harmony amongst many as we visit locations of such meditation groups as: Norras Temple, SF Zen Center, San Bao Temple, Buddhist Church of SF, Soto Zen Buddhism International Center, and the Vietnamese Buddhist Association of SF. The tour starts in Chinatown and passes through Japantown, home of the Japan Center Peace Pagoda. The walk will end at SF Zen Center.

Part of the proceeds from the walk will go to St. Anthony's Dining Room where hot meals are given to the hungry in SF. BGR also has recently given a grant to Glide Memorial’s Daily Free Meals Program in SF.

Many groups will help support the event such as: Berkeley Buddhist Monastery, SF Zen Center, Norras Temple, Institute for World Religions, Dharma Realm Buddhist University, Aloka Vihara and Karuna Buddhist Vihara.

**The mission of Buddhist Global Relief (BGR) is to provide relief to the poor and needy throughout the world regardless of nationality, ethnicity, gender, or religion. Bearing in mind the Buddha's statements that "hunger is the worst kind of illness" and "the gift of food is the gift of life," BGR especially focuses on providing food aid to those afflicted by hunger and lack of food security. Its long-range goal, however, is to combat all the manifestations of poverty that detract from the inherent dignity of human life.
