Today, July 11, is "National Cheer Up the Lonely Day."
The unofficial national holiday was started by a man named Francis Pesek from Detroit, Michigan, as a way to promote kindness toward others, according to the National Day Calendar.
Pesek was a "quiet, kind, wonderful man who had a heart of gold," his daughter, L.J. Pesek, told Holiday Insights.
So today, if you see someone looking down or out of place, whether it's someone you know who recently endured a hard loss, or someone looking lonely at the local coffeeshop, offer your company or kindness!
Word to the wise, however: maybe don't tell the person you choose to reach out to exactly why you're doing so.
You can offer them some flowers, a card, a phone call – maybe even a free slurpee.
Coincidentally, it's also National Blueberry Muffin Day – so find a way to celebrate the two together.
Good luck!
