How to Get People Talking about Your Business

We've all heard that word-of-mouth advertising is the most powerful kind of marketing on the planet. In today's world, where the average consumer sees over 300 advertisements a day, that's even more true.

We've all heard that word-of-mouth advertising is the most powerful kind of marketing on the planet. In today's world, where the average consumer sees over 300 advertisements a day, that's even more true.

How do you get people to talk about your business? To do so, you'll need to really do something unique that gets people excited and wanting to talk about it. Here's how.

==> Take a Stand and Be Passionate

Take a stand. Be passionate about something. Make sure it's something close to your heart or something close to the heart of your business.

Take Tesla Motors for example. They took the stance that not only is green energy important, but it can also be cool. They took those principles and turned it into the first 100% electric powered sports car, selling for over $200,000.

The company today is very successful, but only because they took a stance on a very particular topic and took a risk.

Take a stand. Do something different. Uniqueness and passion gets people involved and gets people talking.

==> Attack the Other Position

It might not be politically correct, but you can certainly get a lot of people to talk about your business by attacking the other side's position.

How was M&Ms built? By directly attacking the competition. The commercial that launched the brand showed a man holding M&Ms in one hand and another brand's chocolate in the other hand. The other brand melted in his hand, while the M&Ms "melt in your mouth, not in your hand," as the slogan goes.

Don't be afraid to go out on a limb and attack. You don't have to point to specific people or businesses, but just attack an idea in general or a deeply held belief.

==> Be in the Limelight, Often

Do everything you can to get in the limelight. That means changing things around as often as you can. Do interesting things often and host "publicity stunts" as often as you can.

Why is Paris Hilton always in the news and on covers of magazines? It's not an accident. She's always in some sort of scandal, some sort of news event, or saying something controversial at some sort of spotlight event.

For a business, generating "buzz" is often more about generating buzz in your own industry rather than on a more general level. Again, do something unique often and change things up as often as you can.

==> Utilize Social Media

One of the best ways to get news and creativity to spread is through social media.

Create a Facebook page that poses a question or attracts a specific person. Instead of "Bob's restaurant page," try a page like "Like This Page If You're Tired of Soggy Tacos."

Also try launching a controversial video. A great video can spread through YouTube like wildfire.

These are just a few ways to get people talking about your business. No matter what you do, however, it still comes down to the first principle - you and your business have to stand for something for people to talk about it.
