Measure E: Schools Seek Voter Support

The $76 per year parcel tax will be on Tuesday's ballot.

In just under a week, Burlingame residents will be voting on Measure E, a four-year parcel tax bringing funding to the Burlingame Elementary School District.

The measure would tax $76 per year, amounting to about $585,000 for the district annually.

In the face of state funding cuts and unpredictable future state revenues, Burlingame officials are seeking a stable source of income for the schools. The district depends on the state for 93 percent of its funding.

District officials plan for the money to go towards math, science, reading and writing education, including hands-on science labs, books, classroom supplies, instructional materials and qualified teachers. Funds will also bolster art and music programs.

Supporters view schools as a key component to Burlingame’s value and have been phone banking and precinct walking in hopes of getting others on board.
