Off-Leash Survey Results Released

Sixty-two percent of all survey participants were in favor of extending off-leash hours.

Burlingame Parks and Recreation Commission has released results of a survey that could determine if off-leash hours will be extended into the evening.

This survey of residents is part of a study commissioned by Burlingame City Council to gather information on the opinion of residents concerning off-leash hours for dogs in Burlingame parks.

Of the 2,000 surveys handed out in Washington Park, approximately 150 surveys were returned to the Parks and Recreation Commission.

Sixty-two percent of all survey participants were in favor of extending off-leash hours to include a designated area between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Currently, off-leash hours are between 6 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. in designated areas of Washington Park and Cuernavaca Park. The City of Burlingame also has a dog exercise park on Airport Boulevard, which is open from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The survey participants were split between dog owners (48 percent) and those who do not own dogs (52 percent).

Among concerns of dogs being off-leash in Washington Park, a majority of survey participants expressed that owners not picking up animal feces or not being able to control their dog was an issue.

The Parks and Recreation Commission will take the results of this survey to Burlingame City Council.

A survey will also be taken at Cuernavaca Park. After the results are gathered and presented to city council, it is anticipated that council will review the city's off-leash policies.
