Peninsula Man ID'd In Deadly Head-On Crash

Officials say the local man collided head-on with another motorist over the weekend.

SAN MATEO, CA — A man who died shortly after he was involved in a head-on collision Saturday morning in Hayward has been identified by the Alameda County coroner's bureau as 54-year-old San Mateo man Nelson Melendez.

At 8:47 a.m., Melendez was driving a black 2008 Honda Civic east on Jackson Street. As he passed Cypress Avenue, Melendez crossed over the raised center median and collided head-on with an oncoming white Toyota RAV4, police said.

Police said the driver of the RAV4 suffered moderate injuries. Melendez died of his injuries later in the day.

The cause of the collision is under investigation. Four other vehicles traveling west on Jackson Street collided with each other as they tried to avoid the first collision. Police said the drivers and passengers in the second collision were not injured.

Police said that based on the lack of skid marks, the direct course of the Honda and the excessive speed it was traveling, it is possible Melendez suffered a medical emergency while driving.
