
BURLINGAME, CA -- Officers arrested a man Wednesday on suspicion of stealing a car, a laptop and other property in Burlingame, police said. The case began when a Burlingame resident reported around 11:15 a.m. that his backpack, with a laptop inside it, had been stolen from his unlocked car, according to police.
The man was able to track his laptop to the Woodlake Shopping Center in San Mateo, police said. Officers went to the shopping center and located a suspect, Cristian Gutierez, 18, of San Mateo, according to police.
When the officers found Gutierez, he was in an allegedly stolen car and in possession of the stolen laptop, police said. Property stolen from other Burlingame residents was in the car, according to police.

Police said the other stolen property had been taken from unlocked cars, as was the laptop.
Gutierez was arrested on suspicion of grand theft, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property and booked into San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City, according to police.

There has been a surge in thefts from unlocked vehicles in residential neighborhoods in Burlingame, police said. Residents are urged to lock car doors and not leave anything valuable in parked cars if at all possible.
