BELMONT, CA — A Las Vegas man was arrested this week in Belmont on suspicion of DUI and other offenses following a car chase that police stopped twice for safety reasons, police said. Allen Tag, 38, was ultimately arrested following the alleged ordeal that started shortly after 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the AM/PM Mini Market at 470 Ralston Ave.

According to Belmont Police Capt. Patrick Halleran, it all began after officers received a report of a reckless driver who had been on U.S. Highway 101 and then was spotted at the local AM/PM. Officers went to the market, and say they found Tag passed out behind the wheel of a 2016 Volkswagen Passat, which has extensive damage to the front ent.

"As officers were attempting to contact him, Tag began driving and pulled out onto Masonic Way where he struck a parked Ford Ranger pick-up," Halleran said in a press release.

According to police, Tag allegedly drove west on Ralston Avenue and south on Old County Road. Officers allegedly followed Tag on Old County Road to Harbor Boulevard and then to El Camino Real.

When Tag made his way onto Davey Glen Road "... police terminated the pursuit for safety reasons and notified neighboring agencies to be on the look out for the vehicle," Halleran said.

Later in the day, Belmont officers saw him again driving south in the 200 block of El Camino Real in Belmont and tried to stop him. But Tag allegedly took off again.

"Tag fled once again and this pursuit was also terminated for safety reasons, when Tag drove on a portion of the center median in an effort to evade Officers," the captain said.

Officers watched him as he allegedly drove down Ralston Avenue and then on El Camino Real into San Carlos. Police said they lost sight of him for a while until he stopped in San Carlos.

"A short time later, Belmont PD Officers found Tag in the vehicle, stopped in the 1000 block of Commercial St in San Carlos where he was taken into custody without incident," he said. "Tag was checked by paramedics and transported to an area hospital for medical evaluation, where he remains as of this press release."

He was eventually released while police ask the district attorney to charge him for DUI, hit-and-run and evading police. Police said they are interested in how Tag's car sustained the front-end damage before he hit the Ford truck.

"Police are continuing to investigate this incident and are specifically interested in learning how Tag's Volkswagen was damaged, prior to it being first reported on southbound Hwy 101 near Hwy 92," Halleran said.
