The Senior Peer Counseling program at Peninsula Family Service offers support for LGBT San Mateo County residents ages 55 years and older. The program is free. Professionally trained LGBT Senior Peer Counselors offer confidential emotional support, guidance, and empathy, and information on resources, to LGBT seniors facing challenges such as loneliness, depression, grief, isolation from family and friends, and life changes. Our program makes possible a special bond of trust between two people who share similar age, experience, values, wisdom, and culture. Rooted on principles of self-help and mutual aid, Peninsula Family Service’s peer counselors help LGBT seniors cope with situations that, left unattended, can lead to depression, hopelessness, life-threatening incidents. Support groups are also available.
Meetings between volunteer counselors and clients take place in the client’s home or in a location where both parties feel comfortable and are ensured privacy. All of the information received is treated with respect and is confidential.
