Surfin' OLA

Our Lady of Angels School puts on a fall faire.

There is nothing quite like a fall festival to bring the community together. This fall, Burlingame residents have the 25th annual Our Lady of Angels School Fun Faire to look forward to.

On September 17 and 18, students, parents, faculty, parish members and volunteers present "Surfin' OLA Fun Faire."  The fair boasts live entertainment, carnival rides, games and traditional festival food.

"The Fun Faire is a wonderful community builder," said Ahnna Dudley, one of the four event co-chairs. "Everyone's involved and the event is entirely volunteer run."

Sponsored by the OLA Mother's Club, the Our Lady of Angels Fun Faire has grown from a small school-wide event 25 years ago to a community staple with upwards of 3,000 guests in attendance last year.  This year's theme, "Surfin' OLA" celebrates a vibrant beach atmosphere with decorations made by students themselves.

Starting on Friday the 17 at 6 p.m., the OLA Fun Faire sets the tone with music by local bands including Project 13, a San Mateo High School band that played at the county fair; Broken Orange, a group of Our Lady of Angels alumni who now attend Saint Ignatius and Blue Spray, a student original that got its start at a talent show last year. Entertainment and carnival games have been planned to amuse tots to teenagers, keeping the entire family engaged.  Older children (and kids at heart) can look forward to bungee jump, laser tag, and raft rides.

"It's fabulous for children of all ages, and the best part is that all money raised goes right back to the school," says Dudley.

Food booths address an array of guilty pleasures such as pizza, hot dogs, barbeque and pulled pork and plenty of desserts to satisfy the sweet tooth. For those opposed to faire food, Saturday evening's sit-down dinner and silent auction serves 500 people with an open bar. The dinner sells out every year, with tickets available at 5 p.m.

Bring the family, a sense of fun and your appetite, and get ready to go "Surfin' OLA."
