Suspected Drunk Driver Hits Cop Car, Peninsula School

BREAKING: The suspect was arrested after trying to flee on foot near Vallemar Elementary School, Pacifica police said.

SAN MATEO COUNTY, CA – A West Sacramento woman allegedly rammed a Pacifica police vehicle Saturday night and then crashed into a school building following an attempt by police to stop her on suspicion of reckless driving, police said.

Heather Byrnes, 31, was arrested following a report at 8 p.m. of someone driving recklessly near the intersection of Nataqua and Reina Del Mar avenues on the edge of Calera Creek Park.

According to police, an officer responded and allegedly found Byrnes near the top of Reichling Avenue, then tried to stop her. She allegedly rammed the officer's vehicle with her vehicle and sped away toward
Reina Del Mar Avenue.

Police said the officer and a K-9 in the vehicle were unhurt.

Byrnes was allegedly last seen driving into the parking lot of Vallemar Elementary School, where her vehicle crashed into a building on the school's campus.

Police said Byrnes allegedly ran from her vehicle and was apprehended on the school's grounds.

Byrnes was taken to a hospital and then booked into county jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer, evading police, DUI and hit-and-run.
