Sixteen educators were honored today -- including one from Las Virgenes Unified School District -- as Los Angeles County Teachers of the Year and will advance to the statewide competition.

The honorees were chosen from 77 district-level teachers of the year chosen earlier this year from among the county’s 75,000 teachers, according to the county Office of Education.

Each of the 16 honorees named today received $1,000 honorariums during a ceremony in Universal City.

Among them was 14-year teacher William Garrett.

Among Bill’s greatest rewards as a teacher of theater arts is seeing his students completely engaged with the learning process, challenging each other and collaborating to come up with creative solutions and productions, according to a press release from the county Office of Education. The concept of “ensemble” is foundational to his classes.
