'Star Wars' Leads Nominations for Visual Effects Awards

The awards will be presented Feb. 2 at the Beverly Hilton.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” scored a leading seven film nominations today for the 14th annual Visual Effects Society Awards, while HBO’s “Game of Thrones” collected nine nods to lead the television nominees.

“Star Wars” was nominated for best visual effects in a feature film, along with “Furious 7,” “San Andreas,” “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “The Martian.”

Nominations for best supporting visual effects in a feature went to “In the Heart of the Sea,” “Bridge of Spies,” “The Walk,” “Everest” and “The Revenant.”

“Game of Thrones” was nominated for outstanding visual effects in a television episode, along with “Nezlamna,” “Childhood’s End,’ “Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell” and “The Strain.”

The awards will be presented Feb. 2 at the Beverly Hilton.

During the ceremony, “The Martian” director Ridley Scott will receive a lifetime achievement award, while conceptual artist Syd Mead will receive the society’s Visionary Award.
