Weiss Wills Calabasas Past Burbank Burroughs

Coyotes' catcher starts winning rally with an eighth-inning walk, steals a base and scores on a single in Valley Invitational Baseball League game

Trevor Weiss was determined to win, and on Monday the Calabasas High catcher put forth one of his best all-around efforts of the summer.

Weiss reached base in all four of his plate appearances, the final one coming in the top of the eighth inning when he led off with a walk, stole second base and scored what proved to the winning run in a 9-7 victory over host Burbank Burroughs in a Valley Invitational Baseball League game.

"Trevor came up big, and in a crazy game like this one, we needed someone to step up for us,'' Coyotes coach Ed Edsall said. "He did his job at the plate and he threw out multiple base runners when he was out in the field.''

The Indians (4-9) couldn't figure out a way to stop Weiss. He finished with triple, a run, two RBI and three walks for Calabasas (4-7).

The Coyotes started well and jumped out to an early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning off starter Dillon Disiere. Burroughs, however, answered with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.

Calabasas tacked on two more runs in the top half of the second to tie the score. They scored twice in the sixth to lock up the score, 6-6, and a run in the seventh sent the game into extra innings.

Shortly thereafter, Weiss battled with Alemany reliever Nate Bogard and, ultimately, drew a walk to start the eighth inning rally.

Weiss subsequently swiped second based and scored on an Alex Rubanowitz single to give Calabasas an 8-7 advantage.  The Coyotes added an insurance run to secure the victory.

"Trevor has tremendous speed. He's extremely quick and you saw the major difference that speed makes out there tonight,'' Edsall said.

Jacob Fields, an experienced right-hander, started for the Coyotes and he didn't end up doing a bad of a job in his four innings. Unfortunately, the defense behind him played poorly, committing numerous errors which led to six runs, only one of which was earned.

He gave up nine hits and struck out three.  Fields' replacement, Ian Sales, fared much better. He gave up one hit and finished with three strikeouts in three scoreless inning of relief.

Offensively, Josh Ehrlich had a good day at the plate with two hits and a pair of RBI for Calabasas. Rubanowitz had two RBI as well. Teammates Anthony DiCosimo and Justyn Lee had three and two stolen bases, respectively.

The fact the Coyotes got that type of production was key when considering one of their top hitters, Jacob Camhi, struck out four times.

Then again, with Weiss being so disruptive each time he stepped into the batter's box, Camhi could have afforded to take the day off.

"Trevor is a game-changer,'' Edsall said. "It's nice having him around. He makes my job easier. We like what we've seen from him.''
