The project will include the following:

  • Widening of San Tomas Expressway from three to four lanes in each direction, from El Camino Real through Homestead Road, merging back to three lanes south of Homestead Road;
  • Extending the San Tomas Aquino trail on the west side of the expressway heading south from the current terminus at El Camino Real, crossing Benton Street and ending at Homestead Road;
  • As per the trail limits, installing a sidewalk along the east side of the expressway;
  • Adjacent to the new trail and sidewalk, installing 10-foot high walls to replace the existing six-foot high walls; and
  • Making improvements to both the intersection and the traffic signals at Benton Street and Homestead Road, including the addition of double left turn lanes along Homestead.

Message signs will be placed up to a week in advance to provide notice to motorists of the upcoming work. Motorists’ understanding and patience are greatly appreciated. Motorists are advised to take alternate routes to avoid possible daytime delays from lane closures.
