San Jose State Sports Medicine Director Pleads Guilty To Illegally Touching Athletes

Between 2017 and 2020, Scott Shaw touched the breasts and/or buttocks of four athletes at the school, according to authorities.

SAN JOSE, CA — The former sports medicine director of San Jose State University pleaded guilty this week in federal court to illegally touching female student-athletes under the guise of medical treatment, according to authorities.

Between 2017 and 2020, Scott Shaw touched the breasts and/or buttocks of three water polo players and one member of the soccer team without consent or legitimate medical purpose, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

“Scott Shaw abused his position of trust and authority as a public university official to sexually assault female student-athletes who entrusted him with their medical care,” Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke said in a news release.

“No student-athlete should ever be subject to sexual harassment at the hands of their sports medicine director, coach or any other official at a college or university.”

Shaw is set to be sentenced Nov. 14 and faces a maximum of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine for each count, according to authorities.
