Teen, 16, Surrenders In Connection With Fatal Hit-and-Run Near Cambrian Park

A 15-year-old was killed, two others injured Saturday in the accident on Hillsdale that police say involved alcohol and speeding.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested today after turning himself in as one of the drivers in an alleged hit-and-run collision that killed one and injured two others Saturday in San Jose, police said.

The teen, who is not being identified, was booked into the Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter in a crash that killed 15-year-old Vladimir Cavadas Vargas, police spokeswoman Sgt. Heather Randol said.

At 3:13 a.m. Saturday, San Jose police responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash in the area of Hillsdale Avenue and Meridian Avenue east of the Cambrian Park area of South San Jose, Randol said.

Two cars, a Toyota Scion and Honda Accord, had been traveling at high rates of speed westbound on Hillsdale when the Toyota collided with the Honda, causing the Honda to veer off the roadway and smash into a power pole, police said.

Vargas, who was a passenger in the Honda, died at the scene while two other passengers in the Honda were hospitalized for serious injuries not considered life-threatening, according to police.

The driver of the Honda fled on foot while the driver of the Toyota drove away from the scene. Police have since identified the driver of the Toyota, but have not released the person’s name.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing but so far police have determined that excessive speed and alcohol were factors, Randol said.
