Threatening Phone Call Prompts Evacuation Of Campbell School

The call appears to be a hoax, police said.

Police searched a Campbell elementary school this afternoon after the school received a threatening phone call that appears to have been a hoax, a police captain said.

A person called Rosemary Elementary School at 401 W. Hamilton Ave. at about 1:50 p.m. and threatened violence against the staff and students there, police Capt. Gary Berg said.

The school was immediately locked down and Campbell police responded to conduct a search of the campus with the assistance of San Jose police, Berg said.

“The school staff and kids did an outstanding job following the protocol, which allowed our officers to do a systematic search of the school,” Berg said.

It took about 90 minutes for officers from the two departments to complete the search. San Jose police “were a huge resource for helping the search,” Berg said. “There are two different buildings so it was a pretty big search area.”

It appears the call was a hoax, and possibly a “swatting” incident, a false report intended to draw a SWAT team to the school, Campbell police said. Investigators are looking into exactly where the call came from. Parents were coming to pick their children up at the school late this afternoon, Berg said.
