Aptos Teen Arrested In Connection With Hit-And-Run

The 17-year-old suspect was found sitting on a park bench near the beach, authorities said.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday in connection with a hit-and-run collision in the Rio Del Mar neighborhood of Santa Cruz County earlier this month, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

Trevor Maddy, an Aptos resident, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and was booked into county juvenile hall, CHP Officer Leland Atkins said. Maddy is suspected of driving a car that struck 25-year-old Nicole Brown, who was walking on a sidewalk on Treasure Island Avenue west of Winfield Way around 3:30 a.m. on June 13, CHP officials said.

Maddy allegedly drove the vehicle onto the sidewalk and struck Brown, who was left with major injuries, according to CHP officials. Brown remains in the hospital and her parents suspect she may be paralyzed, CHP Officer Trista Sharp said.

The vehicle, a 2004 Volvo XC90, was seen heading west on Treasure Island Avenue after the collision, Sharp said. The Volvo was found unoccupied and with right front damage on June 17 on Beach Street and was taken in by the CHP as evidence, according to Atkins.

CHP officials on Tuesday announced Maddy was a suspect in the collision and received anonymous tips that led them to the Rio Del Mar State Beach area, where he was found sitting on a park bench around 7:30 p.m. and arrested without incident, Atkins said.

Brown’s family had offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the collision, CHP officials said. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the CHP’s Santa Cruz area office at (831) 662-0511.
