2 Arrested After Carlsbad High-Speed Chase

BREAKING: Police allegedly found burglary tools and stolen property inside the car, following the high-speed chase through Carlsbad.

CARLSBAD, CA – A man and a woman were arrested early Friday after allegedly leading police officers on a high-speed chase through Carlsbad in a car containing burglary tools and stolen property.

An officer attempted to pull over the black Mercedes-Benz for a traffic violation just before 2:50 a.m. on southbound Interstate 5 at Las Flores Road, but the car failed to stop, according to the Carlsbad Police Department.

Officers followed the car south on the freeway and onto eastbound Cannon Road, where it eventually stopped near College Boulevard, according to police. Police allegedly found stolen property after searching the car, but authorities did not immediately disclose from where it was taken.

According to police, the driver, San Diego resident Richard Benedict, 36, was arrested on suspicion of failure to yield to an emergency police vehicle, a felony warrant, possession of stolen property and possession of burglary tools. The passenger, Santee resident Kayla Dwyer, 20, was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools and burglary.

Police said both suspects were booked into Vista Detention Facility.
