📰 News we're reading

1. District relocates Pacific Rim battery system after neighbors' concerns (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad Unified has agreed to move a planned battery energy storage system at Pacific Rim Elementary after nearby residents objected to its original placement. District staff, city representatives, and the Carlsbad Fire Department walked the campus twice before settling on a new, centrally located site near the parking lot off Hidden Valley Road that still meets safety standards.

2. State ownership limits Carlsbad's control over beach maintenance (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad officials are stressing that most of the city's seven-mile coastline, including Tamarack and Robert C. Frazee state beaches, is controlled by California State Parks, limiting what the city can repair or improve. City Manager Geoff Patnoe says Carlsbad is pressuring the state to fix a deteriorating beach sign and respond to erosion, while clarifying that natural rock formations on city-managed sand weren't dumped there.

3. Tamarack State Beach battered by erosion as sand vanishes, parking lot closes (amedpost.com) — Carlsbad's Tamarack State Beach has lost nearly all its sand, forcing California State Parks to close the main parking lot just as Labor Day visitors arrive and pushing cars onto Carlsbad Boulevard and nearby streets. Powerful El Niño surf and recent storms have damaged the lot, destabilized riprap, and displaced lifeguard towers, while state engineers work on a repair plan that city officials can't directly control.

4. Shelter Shepherd Who 'Doesn't Understand Why She's Behind Bars' Is Heartbroken After Losing Her Family (paradepets.com) — A three-year-old, 109-pound Shepherd named Leeloo is waiting in a Carlsbad shelter after being surrendered by her previous owner, leaving her confused and heartbroken. The story urges potential adopters to consider her and offers practical tips for gently helping surrendered dogs adjust, emphasizing patience, low-stress introductions, and giving them time to trust again.
