📰 News we're reading

1. Carlsbad parents, official frustrated by Pop Warner cheer ruling (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad Pop Warner cheer teams may be barred from regional competition after their coach pulled them from a scorching Oct. 3 game to protect kids from 104-degree heat. Parents and Councilmember Kevin Shin are pressing the West Coast Conference for answers, questioning why a safety decision is being treated as a forfeit and asking for clear extreme-heat policies.

2. Encinitas, Carlsbad brace for El Niño on their shores (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad residents should know the city has declared a local emergency and begun a $1.9 million project to extend rock protections along Carlsbad Boulevard near North Ponto Beach ahead of a potentially record-breaking El Niño. While Encinitas pursues sand and state aid, Carlsbad is also studying cheaper long-term redesigns for the vulnerable stretch between Solamar Drive and Island Way to keep traffic and beach access safe.

3. These Are The Best Elementary Schools In San Diego County: U.S. News Ranking (patch.com) — Several Carlsbad elementary schools rank among San Diego County's best in U.S. News' new statewide analysis of student performance. Poinsettia, Pacific Rim, and Aviara Oaks all earn strong placements, giving Carlsbad families fresh data on how their neighborhood schools compare across California in reading and math growth for younger students.

4. Encinitas, Carlsbad Earn Top Marks in Taxpayer Association's Report Card (patch.com) — Carlsbad just earned an overall "A" grade for fiscal health and transparency from the San Diego County Taxpayers Association, tying with Encinitas for the county's top mark. The report compares pension costs, debt, staffing, and openness across 18 cities, with several larger neighbors scoring poorly, underscoring Carlsbad's relatively strong financial management for local taxpayers.

5. Artist Philip Taylor displays landscape paintings in the Poway Center for the Performing Arts (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Carlsbad art lovers may recognize Philip Taylor, whose work has appeared at the Carlsbad Art Festival and local design studios, as he opens a new exhibit in Poway.
